Commonly used rivets include R-type rivets, fan rivets, blind rivets (knock-in rivets), tree rivets, round head rivets, flat head rivets, semi-hollow rivets, solid rivets, countersunk head rivets, and hollow rivets. These typically use their own deformation to connect the riveted parts. Generally, rivets smaller than 8 mm are cold-riveted, while those larger are hot-riveted. However, there are exceptions, such as nameplates on some locks, which are riveted using interference fit between the rivet and the lock body hole.
R-type plastic rivets, also known as expansion rivets, consist of a plastic male rivet and a female rivet. No installation tools are required. Simply place the mounting base into the smooth hole, press down the head, and the specially designed feet expand under pressure, firmly locking into the mounting surface.
